Substances typically include any basic chemical ingredient used in the manufacturing of materials that are subsequently further used in the manufacture of plastic materials and articles intended to come into contact with food. These include monomers and other starting substances, additives, solvents, aids to polymerization, polymerization production aids, other production aids, colorants, fillers, etc. and mixtures obtained by combining these substances without a chemical reaction.
Intermediates typically include any product that is not a basic chemical but is not yet a finished plastic material or article. They include any plastic powder, granules or flakes, pre-polymers, any semi-finished material and article such as a film, sheet, laminate¸ plastic layers used in multi-material multilayers or plastics multilayers, etc. They require further processing or re-formulation steps to become a finished material or article. This category also includes inks, coatings and adhesives applied in the printing or coating of the plastic material or article or in combining plastics and/or other layers to form multilayer materials and articles.
- Final Materials or Articles
These are any material or article which is ready for food contact without any further change to the formulation of material or article such as: the finished plastic food contact material (e.g. packaging material, storage containers for food, kitchenware utensils, bottles, trays, etc.), finished layers inside a multilayer or multi-material multilayer or finished components of the food contact article that only need to be brought together or assembled to make the final article (e.g. tray and lid, bottle and cap, etc.).
